Fall foliage can be harder to spot in Lafayette than in the north, but it's just as gorgeous. Our real estate agents always make sure to squeeze in a visit or two to local parks while the fall leaves are still on display. Visit these five parks around town to enjoy the blazing colors of fall leaves before the winter sweeps them away.
Moncus Park is Lafayette's most popular outdoor recreation space, opening in January of 2022 after nearly 10 years of development. It features a 1-mile paved loop trail that takes walkers on a journey through the park's preserved bottomland hardwood forest ecosystem.
Many of the beautiful trees here change color in the fall. Keep an eye out for these striking species in specific areas of the park grounds:
When you're done taking in the fall sights, consider heading over to the gardens or children's play area to keep the fun going all day long.
Beaver Park is a quiet oasis located just minutes away from the Lafayette Regional Airport. Most of it is flat open land, but the path around Spreafico Lake is dotted with deciduous trees that sport fall colors late in the season. The park just planted some fresh bald cypress saplings on the grounds earlier this year, so this fall's display should be more impressive than ever.
Girard Park is perhaps Lafayette's second most well-known park. Its best feature is its beautifully serene pond, conveniently circled by a paved walking path that even small children can navigate. It's surrounded by trees that burst into fall colors in late October and early November. The water is also stocked for fishing and topped with an elegant covered pagoda where you can host picnics, socialize with friends, or enjoy some quiet time with a book. Hoping to capture some of the season's majesty in photographs? This area is great for shooting for all your fall foliage snapshots.
If you're interested in taking a longer walk through the fall leaves, Acadiana Park is the place to go. This massive green space has two main walking trails:
No bicycles or other wheeled vehicles are allowed on these trails, making them safer to travel on foot. Most of them also feature raised boardwalks that make it easier to get through dense shrubbery and swampy areas. Look out for the first signs of fall foliage on the red maples, sweet gum trees, and various kinds of oak trees. You'll find clusters of them at different points along the trails.
Thomas Park is less grand than some of the other parks on this list, but it's the perfect place for a quick afternoon outing near our Lafayette homes for sale. It features a short half-mile walking track on mostly level ground and plenty of open space to explore. There are also several hillsides bordered by leafy trees where you can walk off-path and enjoy the fall leaves. Picnic tables are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and the on-site playground provides hours of outdoor fun for young kids.
