Looking for fun on a budget this spring? Baton Rouge's Live After 5 spring festival has you covered. Organized by the city's Downtown Business Association, this biannual event offers a free concert every Friday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. at Rhorer Plaza. Drop by starting March 13th for:
Some local restaurants also offer special deals on takeout food or patio dining during the show.
After the March 13th kickoff, concerts will continue for two more weeks before resuming in April for another three-week block. We don't know which performers will be featured yet, but past years' set lists have included local rap and blues artists, a Beatles tribute band, and even the internationally renowned group The Mixed Nuts.
The Taste of Mid-City Food Festival is back for another year of food, fun, and fundraising for a great cause. From 1 to 5 p.m. on March 22nd, attendees will gather on the lawn in front of The Executive Center Baton Rouge to enjoy:
Kids' Orchestra provides after-school meals and music lessons for nearly 2,000 kids in need in Southern Louisiana. Some of their budding superstars will take the stage during the festival to show off what they've learned.
You can purchase pre-sale adult tickets for this event for just $30 until February 28th. After that, the price will rise to $35 each. Kids' tickets cost just $6 each.
Can't get enough fresh Louisiana crawfish? Neither can we. Luckily, the Krewe of SU Crawfish Boil gives us all the perfect excuse to indulge. On April 12th from noon to 5 p.m., head over to North Sherwood Forest Community Park for a feast of:
Each person who attends will get 3 to 5 pounds of food—more than enough to satisfy your crawfish cravings.
Tickets cost $25 per adult or $15 per child under 13. Adults can purchase alcoholic drinks separately or upgrade to $50 VIP tickets to get access to an open bar. All money raised will fund Southern University's student activities over the next year.
Calling all crafters: the Baton Rouge Fibre Arts & Makers Festival is back for a fifth year at the Artists Loft Market, a bustling commercial arts space near our Baton Rouge homes for sale. Visit from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 18th to stock up on quality supplies for your fiber arts projects, including:
If you're not a maker yourself, look out for the many tables and booths selling handmade products. You can buy everything from hand-sewn scrunchies and tote bags to knit blankets and crochet stuffed toys, all made with love by real people in the Baton Rouge community.
The Baton Rouge Blues Festival has been keeping Louisiana's inimitable swamp blues sound alive for nearly half a century. They'll be back in town for their 45th show weekend on April 17th and 18th, offering two full days of free concerts on four stages scattered around the city's downtown core.
Each day's show schedule starts around noon and continues until around 6:30 p.m. New artists take the stage every hour or so to keep things fresh. This year's set list hasn't been announced yet, but we can expect it to feature a new crop of local talent alongside festival veterans like Hanna PK, Smokehouse Porter, and Jonathon Boogie Long.
While the Blues Festival is free to attend, organizers encourage guests to buy food and drinks from the on-site vendors to help support the event.
