Mardi Gras takes place on Tuesday, 3/4, but the weeks leading up to the main event are equally fun-filled. Our real estate agents share some of the parades and festivals that are on their must-list.
- Krewe of Muses - Magazine & Jefferson, New Orleans, LA 70121
The Krewe of Muses parade adds a touch of Greek mythology to the traditional Mardi Gras celebrations. NOLA's first all-female parade krewe takes their name from the legendary nine daughters of Zeus. Krewe of Muses prioritizes sustainability and eco-awareness in their practices, choosing to forgo traditional plastic bead throws in favor of reusable items such as scarves, tote bags, and soap. Many of the throws are made with recycled materials. The krewe hits the parade trail at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, 2/27.
- Riverwalk Outlets Annual Lundi Gras - Spanish Plaza, 2 Canal St., New Orleans, LA 70130
For the 39th year, Mardi Gras officially takes over the city in a splashy ceremony during the Riverwalk Outlet Annual Lundi Gras. The highlight of the day-long festival is when the NOLA mayor turns the keys to the city over to King Rex and King Zulu, heads of two renowned krewes. A number of lively bands keep the music going, while a spectacular fireworks show after dark caps it all off. Take time to browse some great deals at Nordstrom Rack, Gap, and other shops at Riverwalk Outlet. Mark your calendar for Monday, 3/3, from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. Admission is free, with a VIP experience available for $125.
- Krewe of Red Beans - Marigny Opera House, 725 St. Ferdinand St., New Orleans, LA 70117
No spectators turned up to watch the inaugural Krewe of Red Beans parade in 2009. Undaunted, the krewe pressed on the following year. Today, the parade has become such a top family-friendly event that it's spawned four sub-krewes, including Frijoles, which honors Latin culture. The main Red Bean parade features the signature tradition of beans glued to clothing and other available surfaces. This year's parade is planned for Monday, 3/3, at 2 p.m.
