The French Quarter is the heart of this historic city, attracting residents and visitors to its shops, jazz clubs, restaurants, and more. When you're there, you'll find a myriad of things to see and do, but make sure to stop at these must-see sights and hidden gems recommended by our real estate agents:
- Beckham's Bookshop - 228 Decatur St., New Orleans, LA 70130
Bookstores - particularly independent ones - often struggle to survive, but that hasn't been true of Beckham's Bookshop, which has sold used books since 1967 and has two stories totaling 50,000 to 60,000 books for sale. With such a large number of books, you're sure to find plenty to buy, and you'll find that the shop emphasizes titles about history, architecture, literature, music, and cooking - topics that fit in well in New Orleans! The shop's third story is devoted to vinyl LPs, so make sure to not miss this section.
- The Mardis Gras Museum of Costumes and Culture - 1010 Conti St., New Orleans, LA 70112
New Orleans is famous for its Mardi Gras celebrations featuring elaborate costumes, and you'll see some of them at the Mardi Gras Museum of Costumes and Culture. You can learn about the history of the parades' krewes. Visit the museum's costume closet to choose a feathery, beaded, amazing creation to wear and take part in an indoor parade that lasts about 45-50 minutes. And don't forget to take plenty of selfies of you in your finery.
- New Orleans Pharmacy Museum - 514 Chartres St., New Orleans, LA 70130
Learning about pharmacy and medicine of times past (in this case, the 19th and early to mid-20th century) is always fascinating, and the New Orleans Pharmacy Museum gives you the perfect chance to see countless examples from this time period. Located in a creole townhouse that was constructed in 1822-1823, the museum's site was once the home and apothecary of Louis J. Dulfilho, Jr., the first licensed pharmacist in the U.S. You'll be able to see gold-coated pills, some of Dulfilho's handwritten prescriptions, an old treatment room, a birthing chair, and much more. Along the way, you'll also learn how quinine and absinthe were claimed to be able to cure almost any ailment.
- Fritzel's European Jazz Pub - 733 Bourbon St., New Orleans, LA 70116
Since New Orleans is the birthplace of jazz, what better place to enjoy it than at Fritzel's European Jazz Pub? It's located in the heart of the French Quarter in a building constructed in 1831 and is Bourbon Street's oldest continually operating jazz club. Live music is featured daily at 12:30 p.m., and even though the pub doesn't serve food, it has a nice menu of adult beverages that include the New Orleans favorite Hurricane, made with white and dark rum along with fruit juices.
