In 1938, butcher David Owens and wife Emma, a chef, opened the modest but groundbreaking Owens Grocery & Market. When it became difficult to compete with supermarkets, the couple decided to pivot to Southern cooking. The menu changes daily, featuring customer favorites such as fried chicken, po'boys, and jambalaya to go with mac & cheese, yams, collard greens, and other traditional sides.
