Structures at this quirky museum, less than an hour's drive from NOLA, include a vintage service station and a 100-year-old Creole house. Inspired by New Mexico's Tinkertown Museum, founder John Preble used more than 50,000 found and recycled objects to create folk art in unique displays. Dr. Wagner's Honey Island Swamp Tours provide an up-close look at a pristine wilderness area, only an hour away from New Orleans, that has remained largely untouched. Named for the honeybees that were once seen on a nearby island, Honey Island Swamp is home to wildlife such as alligators, red wolves, and a bald eagle nest dating back more than a century. Some visitors even claim to have spotted a Bigfoot-type creature! Morning and afternoon tours are scheduled daily, with tickets ranging from $23-$64.

When you're in the mood for a scenic and relaxing road trip, head out on Louisiana Hwy. 22. Lush forests and stunning landscapes line both sides of the road, and you can stretch your legs with a walk in charming towns such as Maurepas, Springfield, and Ponchatoula. Other notable sites include the Lake Maurepas Swamp.

Many family memories revolve around food. Have fun exploring the finer points of one of Louisiana's iconic food products as you follow the Andouille Trail. For a special treat, visit the places where you can see andouille being made and sample some of the finished product. For example, Jacob's World Famous Andouille has been featured on Emeril Cooks. Family-owned since 1928, Jacob's offers free tours of their smokehouse along with samples of their award-winning andouille.
