Garden District

With its oak-lined streets, grand mansions, and timeless Southern charm, New Orleans' historic Garden District is one of the city's most captivating neighborhoods. Our real estate agents share some of their favorite places in this neighborhood near New Orleans homes for sale.

  • The Rink - 2727 Prytania St., New Orleans, LA 70130
Yesterday's roller rink is today's collection of charming boutiques. In 1884, The Rink held the distinction of being the largest roller skating rink in the country. In a masterful stroke of repurposing, the facility is now home to a handful of small businesses. Be sure to visit the Garden District Book Shop and stop for coffee at the Chicory House. The Rink is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.

  • Commander's Palace - 1403 Washington Ave., New Orleans. LA 70130
New Orleans gained a worldwide reputation as a culinary mecca thanks to restaurants such as the iconic Commander's Palace. While the classic Creole seafood restaurant dates back to 1893, Commander's Palace truly achieved landmark status when "Miss Ella" Brennan took over in 1969. Legendary chefs Paul Prudhomme and Emeril Lagasse made their names here, and the restaurant's many awards include induction into the Culinary Institute of America Hall of Fame. Commander's Palace is open seven days a week for dinner, with lunch served Thursday through Sunday. Reservations are strongly recommended, and there is a dress code.

  • Garden District Walking Tour - Garden District Book Shop, 2727 Prytania St., New Orleans, LA 70130
NOLA Historic Tours is your host for a fascinating two-hour Garden District Walking Tour. Depart from the Garden District Book Shop as you stroll through the "open-air museums," viewing magnificent homes in Queen Anne, Gothic, Greek Revival, and other architectural styles. Highlights include a ride on the famous St. Charles Avenue Streetcar and visits to the filming sites of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and American Horror Story. Tours take place daily at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 and $29, with free admission for kids ages 12 and under.

  • Stein's Market & Deli - 2207 Magazine St., New Orleans, LA 70130
Pick up an authentic bagel with lox and cream cheese or a hearty pastrami on rye at Stein's Market & Deli. The menu features other East Coast favorites such as Italian hoagies, egg salad sandwiches, and matzoh ball soup. Of course, there's a nod to local cuisine with the muphuletta, made with layers of mortadella, sopresatta, ham, Provolone, and olive salad served on a ciabatta roll with garlic vinaigrette. Hours are 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. weekends.

The Garden District offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and vibrant local life, making it one of the most desirable places to call home in New Orleans. Whether you're exploring its charming streets, savoring world-class cuisine, or discovering hidden gems, this iconic neighborhood has something for everyone.
