New Orleans Neighborhood

When you are shopping for New Orleans homes for sale and are a little less laissez les bon temps rouler and a little more taking it easy in the Big Easy, Mid-City might be the perfect landing spot for you.

Mid-City Is Not Your Everyday Neighborhood

Eclectic and unpretentious, Mid-City offers family-friendly living with enough quirkiness to still feel like you live in New Orleans. Its location just beyond the French Quarter doesn't attract as many tourists and welcomes neighbors, giving you a feeling of belonging right from the start.

Tradition Abounds

Part of living in Crescent City is soaking up the tradition that makes New Orleans unique. Mid-City doesn't lose that. Here you can stroll the streets to your favorite restaurant that makes a shrimp po' boy just the way you like it. Or you can catch the Endymion, a Mardi Gras parade that is one of the few remaining that doesn't go down the famed St. Charles Avenue.

Kids will love the playground called Storyland, based on fairy tale characters, or the Carousel Amusement Park complete with a merry-go-round that's over 100 years old. Both of these are found in City Park, a 1300-acre urban park that is home to a large stand of stately live oaks, including one that is over 800 years old. There's also a fun free music festival on the Bayou St. John in May called Bayou Boogaloo which, along with amazing music, features local and regional art, 300 food vendors, and activities for kids.

For some visitors and residents alike, New Orleans' best feature is found among the dead. Visiting cemeteries as a tourist is a thing here, and Mid-City has its share of ghostly offerings. Scruffy Holt Cemetery lets visitors get to know its residents' personalities because this is where less fortunate people are often buried, and so, instead of ornate grave markers, family members leave personal mementos at each unadorned graveside.

New Offerings

While Mid-City's charm comes from the history and slightly worn around the edges vibe, some more modern additions make living here bon temps. Along with traditional snow-ball shops, you can now visit one of the micro-breweries for pub food and craft beers. Or if being in the outdoors is your Zen time, you will love the new greenway that runs between Basin Street to Carrollton Avenue.  The 2.6 mile Lafitte Greenway is excellent for walkers, runners, and cyclists, and features bioswales and native plant meadows.

Whether traditional sites attract you or it's the new things waiting to become a tradition that turns your head, this part of New Orleans makes for a great place to live.
